COMPANY HISTORY

Gail Borden Jr., born in 1801, was a man with many interests and talents besides that of an inventor. He went to Texas in 1829 and became a well-known figure in early Texas history.

First a farmer and stockman, he then took a position as the surveyor in San Felipe, Texas.  He was one of the founders of the Texas Telegraph and Register.   In the city of Galveston, he served as collector at the Port of Galveston and then moved on to selling real estate on the island in the 1840's.

Gail Borden was very interested in food preservation.  In the 1849 he invented a meat biscuit made of dehydrated meat and flour.  His invention saw no commercial success despite his relocating to New York in 1851 in an effort to further promote his product.

He then turned his attention to preserving milk for infants.  He received an American and British patent for the vacuum processing of condensed milk in 1856.  In 1857 he opened the New York Condensed Milk Company, which later became the Borden Company.

Like many other businessmen of his era, such as Ferdinand Schumacher of early oatmeal fame, his product took off during the Civil War, bringing him financial success.

He opened factories in Connecticut, New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Maine.  He also developed other processes for condensing fruit juices, extract of beef and  for coffee.

He opened a meatpacking plant in Borden, Texas after the Civil War.  He continued to live part of the year in Texas, where he died in 1874.  He was buried in New York.
