BOOK REVIEW

MORE FAVORITE BRAND NAME RECIPES COOKBOOK

by the Editors of Consumer Guide

(Beekman House - 1984)

This out-of-print cookbook follows the identical format and topic of another book by the same authors: Favorite Brand Name Recipe Cookbook.  This too, is an older cookbook that has lost none of its appeal for me over time.

Even though over twenty years have passed since this title first hit the bookstores, I still refer to it frequently.  This usually occurs when I have tired of looking through old clippings for a recipe that I know I have somewhere but can't seem to locate.

As the authors foresaw, I can always remember the brand name of the primary recipe ingredient, but never the title.  Their indexes at the rear of the book make it extremely easy to look up the brand name and see which associated recipes are to be found inside.

There are over 1,800 brand name recipes featured in this collection and not one of them is repeated from the previous book.

Different recipes mean different illustrations as well--there's a center section containing 67 color photos of some of the completed recipes.

Something that I didn't mention in the review of the previous book is the address directory of the food manufacturers that's located in the back.   No food company website URL's there, only snail mail addresses at physical locations.  Though some of the address information may be outdated, the directory itself could still be useful for culinary research purposes.

A lot has changed in the food industry since 1984.  Over 6,000 new products were introduced to the market in the year 2005 alone.  The one thing thing that hasn't changed is the power of brand name recognition.  No matter how many times some of these original brand name foods may have changed corporate owners, or addresses, the brand name of the product is retained.

It's possible that a scant few of the brand name ingredients mentioned in the book are no longer being produced, but if the product was any good to begin with, you can bet it's still on the market today, so the majority of the recipes are still doable, despite the publication date of this book.

This title can be found in both softcover and hardcover editions, and sometimes in your search you may run across Publications International, Ltd. being listed as the copyright holder.
